Cordless hair tools are made for travel: no adaptor hunting, no cables, no fighting over the one socket by the mirror. But because they run on rechargeable lithium batteries, airlines treat them differently from corded tools. Here's what to know before you pack.

The short answer
In general, devices containing lithium batteries — including cordless straighteners and curlers — are expected to travel in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage. Many airlines and aviation authorities ask that battery-powered heating devices are protected from accidental activation. Corded tools without batteries are usually allowed in either bag.
For example, the US Transportation Security Administration lists cordless curling irons in its What Can I Bring? database, and European airlines publish their own dangerous-goods pages. Your airline's page is the final word.
Carry-on vs checked bag
| Tool | Hand luggage | Checked bag | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cordless straightener (lithium battery) | Usually yes | Usually no | Airline battery rules; prevent accidental switch-on |
| Cordless curler (lithium battery) | Usually yes | Usually no | Same as above |
| Corded straightener or curler | Usually yes | Usually yes | Plug type and voltage at your destination |
| Spare power banks for charging | Usually yes | No | Capacity limits set by your airline |
How to pack a cordless hair tool
- Switch it fully off. Make sure the tool is powered down, not on standby.
- Let it cool completely. Never pack a warm tool.
- Protect it from switching on. Use the protective cap if your tool has one, and pack it in a pouch so the button can't be pressed by other items.
- Keep it in your hand luggage. Put it somewhere easy to reach in case security wants to see it.
- Pack the USB cable. A USB-rechargeable tool can charge from a laptop, power bank or hotel USB socket — so you can usually skip the bulky adaptor.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a cordless straightener in my checked bag?
Generally, devices with lithium batteries are expected to travel in hand luggage rather than checked bags. Check your airline's dangerous-goods rules before you fly.
Do I need an adaptor for a USB-rechargeable straightener?
Usually not for the tool itself — you can charge from a laptop, power bank or USB socket. You may need a plug adaptor for a wall USB charger.
Can I use a cordless straightener on the plane?
Many airlines do not allow heating devices to be used on board. Check your airline's rules and keep the tool switched off during the flight.
