Fine hair often looks flat because it's soft and slips. Curls add visible fullness — if you keep products light, use low heat and set each curl as it cools.

How to do volume curls for thin hair: step by step

  1. Lightweight prep. Volumising mousse at the roots before drying; skip heavy creams and oils.
  2. Dry upside down. Rough-dry with your head flipped for root lift.
  3. Texture spray. A light mist on dry hair gives curls grip.
  4. Lowest effective setting. Fine hair curls easily — more heat doesn't help.
  5. Small sections. Small sections give more curls, which reads as more hair.
  6. Pin-cool everything. Roll and clip each curl; release after 10 minutes.
  7. Scrunch, don't brush. Scrunch gently for volume. A brush flattens fine curls.

Curl the top layer in the opposite direction to the layer beneath — it creates more separation and makes the hair look fuller.

Variations to try

  • Root-lift only: Curl only the crown for lift.
  • Half-up: Volume at the crown with curls underneath.
  • Bob volume: See our short hair curling guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my thin hair look thicker with curls?

Small sections, alternate directions, texture spray, and scrunch rather than brush.

Why won't fine hair hold a curl?

It's soft and slippery. Use texture spray, low heat and pin-cool each curl.

Is heat bad for thin hair?

Use the lowest effective temperature and heat protectant every time.
