- Curl everything first. On prepped, dry hair, curl in small sections, alternating direction for movement. Let the curls cool.
- Loosen the curls. Separate gently with your fingers for softness.
- Section the top. Take hair from temple to temple, back to the crown.
- Add a little lift. Lightly backcomb the crown section underneath for volume.
- Choose your finish. Twist, bow, claw clip or braid — see the four versions below.
- Secure and soften. Pin firmly, then pull out one or two face-framing pieces and curl them again if needed.
The four versions
- Twisted: twist each side back towards the crown and pin where they meet.
- Bow: tie the top section with a satin ribbon — the most popular wedding-guest finish.
- Claw clip: twist the top section once and secure with a claw clip — a ten-second weekend look.
- Braided: braid two small sections from the temples and pin them together at the back.
Variations to try
- Half-up top knot: Twist the top into a small bun for a casual look.
- Bubble half-up: Add elastics every few centimetres down the top section.

Frequently asked questions
Should I curl my hair before or after putting it half up?
Before. Curl, let cool, then style — curls hold their shape better and the top section is easier to work with.
Does half-up half-down work on short hair?
Yes, on shoulder-length hair; take a smaller top section.
How do I stop the half-up part from slipping?
Secure with a clear elastic first, then add your twist, bow or clip on top.
