Heat protectant, hairspray and serums leave a film on hot plates and chambers. Over time that build-up makes tools drag, snag hair and leave a burnt smell. A two-minute clean once a week keeps them gliding.

How to clean straightener plates
- Switch off, unplug the charger and cool completely. Cordless tools still hold heat — wait until the plates are cool to the touch.
- Wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. This removes loose residue and hair.
- For sticky build-up, use a barely damp cloth. Wring it out until it is only just damp. Wipe the plates gently. Avoid the buttons, charging port and seams.
- Dry thoroughly. Wipe with a dry cloth and leave the tool open to air-dry before you charge or use it.
- Refit the cap. If your tool has a protective cap, put it back on for storage.
Curlylooks Cordless Hair StraightenerFrom €34.99View productHow to clean an automatic curler
Automatic curlers have a chamber rather than open plates, so residue and stray hairs can collect inside. With the device switched off and fully cool, remove any visible hairs gently — never pull hard or use sharp objects inside the chamber. Wipe the accessible surfaces with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, then allow everything to dry fully before charging.
Check the supplied care guide for anything specific to your model, such as which parts can be wiped and which should not be touched.
What never to use
- Abrasive sponges, scourers or steel wool — they scratch coatings
- Harsh household cleaners or bleach
- Sharp objects inside a curler chamber
- Running water or immersion
- Cleaning while the tool is hot or charging
How to stop build-up in the first place
- Let heat protectant and serums dry fully before styling
- Use the lightest effective amount of product
- Apply hairspray after styling, not before
- Keep tools capped or in a pouch to avoid dust
